This is a well-established department in the school. It is located in B block, which many of our former pupils will remember as East Block. The main Geography room was then Room 42 - remember the globes, the large rock collection, the tracing tables and the map chests? The teachers in the 70s were Mr. McKenzie, Mr. Allen, Miss Ward and Mrs. Fisher
Parents may well remember the fieldwork. Sixth Form Studies Weeks in Snowdonia based at Betws-y-Coed, the Dales, based in Swaledale, and in Yorkshire (Cranedale). Starting in 1971 we had field days at the East Coast of Yorkshire (Hornsea, Bridlington and Filey) and the Peak District especially around Castleton. Later came the Rivers study which continues to this day and is very popular in all weathers. In fact, at Willowgarth we try to make geography as interesting as we possibly can.
In all years our pupils study:
Physical geography, concerned with landscapes and their formation;
Human geography, concerned with the impact of people on the landscape;
Regional geography, about different countries of the world; physical and human landscapes.

We encourage all our pupils to think actively and look at their local and wider environment, and ask the question "Why?"
The work covered in Key Stage 3 (years 7, 8 and 9) provides an excellent starting point for those pupils who want to go on and study geography at GCSE level.
This is where more practical aspects of geography, such as fieldwork, are added.
This continuity and progression helps to keep pupils interested and motivated throughout the full five years, which is reflected in our examination results.
