The Design Technology Staff
Born in Barnsley - father was a miner and mother is a cleaner. Studied for three years at Barnsley College gaining two BTEC qualifications - The First and National Diplomas in Construction. At this time my intention was to be an Architect, and from 1990 to 1994 I studied a degree in Architecture (building design). In the holiday periods between university, I worked three part-time jobs - building labourer, bar-person and IT assistant at Barnsley College. As a building labourer I mainly worked on flat and pitched roofing. As a barman I worked in various pubs in Barnsley Town Centre - the Royal Hotel and Tommy Wallocks. At Barnsley College I worked as a data inputter for three summer periods. This is how I first got into working with computers.
As I left University, there were few jobs in the building industry, so I decided to move into teaching. I stayed on with my bar job for another 2 years before securing a job at Barnsley College as a facilitator and lecturer. The courses I taught included GNVQ's in Construction and the Built Environment, City and Guilds Computer Aided Design (my specialist subject), and of course, ICT! I left the College after 5 years to study at Sheffield Hallam University to become a Design Technology teacher. I am now at Willowgarth teaching ICT and Design Technology.
Since leaving school I have attended a course just about every year, gaining many qualifications. I have recently completed a Masters degree in Education and Professional Development. I believe that no matter what your background, there is always opportunity if you look hard enough. The basis for this is doing well at school (which I didn't) resulting in me wasting 4 years of my life working in a bar on low wages. My advice - try your best and the results will come!
