The department teaches all aspects of lifeskills including careers education and work experience. It is a popular subject and the department has considerable respect within the school and both inside and outside of the Authority. It received an excellent report from Ofsted.
The department promotes certification through various initiatives including a key skill qualification through work experience. It has secured a Lifetime Career Achiever award for its students during the three years the scheme has been running. It also holds four our of five modules/awards for quality assurance in careers education. In 1999/2000 the department topped the table in Barnsley for the number of Trident Gold Awards presented to students.
PHSE is a compulsory subject taught to pupils from years 7 to 11. It is a lifeskills course which aims to provide pupils with those qualities necessary to complement both academic and social development.
The subject is taught in an active way and makes full use of outside agencies offering a wide variety of information and support. The programme seeks to develop in its pupils self confidence and esteem and self-worth. It gives them the opportunity to voice their opinions and to listen to and have respect for the views of others. PHSE culminates in year 11 with a comprehensive and forward-looking careers programme which prepares pupils for the challenges of adulthood.
Willowgarth High School offers a comprehensive and impartial Careers Guidance Programme. The school holds 4 out of the 5 Quality Awards for Careers Education. We have strong links with Barnsley College and Lifetime Careers who offer advice and guidance.
Speakers from College and other occupational areas regularly visit school to widen students' perspective of the opportunities available at 16+.
The school also provides all students with the opportunity of a three week Work Experience organised by BESY - Business Education South Yorkshire.
The department has specialist rooms and two are well equipped with computers, including connection to the internet and intranet. The third room should come on line in April.
