Outdoor Pursuits

Willowgarth High School has an active walking club, organising activities most weekends and holidays throughout the year. These activities include day walks, camping and Youth Hostel visits, which are open to all staff and pupils. Parents come along too.
Go to the Diary on the left of this page to see when various activities take place.
We are also introducing climbing as an activity for Year 10 pupils. Groups have been taken to climb indoors in the evenings. Later we are hoping to take these experienced groups into Derbyshire to climb on the gritstone edges.
Day walks are usually made to the White and Dark areas of the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales. Camping and Youth Hostel visits go further afield, depending on the length of the visit.

Some of the longer distance walks completed in the last year have been -- Pendle Witch Way (12 miles), Wildways Walk (20 miles) and the Nidderdale Way (53 miles). Longer holiday visits have been to Scotland, Wales and the Lake District.

One of the two extended visits that was introduced in 1991 has continued to run each year. This is to Rydal Hall Youth Centre, which we have used for the past 18 years, in the Lake District and is for Years 8 this year. We are also introducing two more extended visits in Centres this year. One in Wydale, for Year 9 and the other at Trig Point 49, Staithes, for Year 7. These are self catering centres where the children take part in a variety of educational and environmental activities on their walks. We will continue to use these centres in 2001.
The Languages Department organise visits to France and Germany and the Geography and Science Departments organise field study visits as part of their G.C.S.E. Courses.

Visits have been organised, by form teachers, for groups to go skiing at both Sheffield on the dry slopes and abroad on the snow. Visits to Disney Land and local visits bowling and skating also take place. Groups also go on assault courses and extended visits with the Army.
