The School
Willowgarth is a mixed, community school occupying a large open site set in extremely pleasant countryside between the villages of Grimethorpe and Brierley. Having approximately 815 pupils, it is small enough to ensure that no child will be overlooked, and yet it enjoys many advantages owing to its generous accommodation.

We are especially proud of our state-of-the-art computer rooms; our provision for science; design technology; and visual and performing arts; our special needs area (The Link); our learning support unit; our library; our conference room and, last but certainly not least, our dining area.

Improvements to the grounds and premises continue apace. This year another computer room has been built. The running track has been restored and the tennis courts and their perimeter fence have been renewed. Two sets of toilets have been refurbished to a high specification and two disabled toilets have been installed.

Willowgarth was the first school nationally to have a nursery on site. Not only does the nursery provide quality childcare for the local community, the school is able to use this tremendous facility for realistic work placements for our pupils.

Improved facilities have been more than matched by the upgrading of the skills of our staff, both teaching and non-teaching, who are dedicated to providing not only a first-class formal education, but also high quality care and a wide range of other opportunities to enrich the children's lives.

Not surprisingly, the improvements to the accommodation and the grounds have been complemented by great improvements in the school's ethos.

Central to our philosophy is the belief that a school can succeed only in partnership with the community it serves. Willowgarth reaches out into both the immediate and the wider community to the considerable benefit of its pupils. Of paramount importance is the spirit of partnership that we foster with parents. You entrust to us your most precious assets, and we know that if we share your insights into your children, we will be better able to secure their development and progress. Contact with parents, therefore, is valued at any time.

Information/Dates and Events
It is our policy to keep parents fully informed of events, curricular initiatives and the life of the school in general. During the course of the year you will receive a number of communications on individual issues. There is much more information about our school which is available to parents which we simply cannot afford to duplicate and publish (to do so would divert money from teaching the pupils). Several documents - e.g. Governors' policy statements, minutes of Governors' meetings, examination results, syllabuses, schemes of work - are available for inspection at the school on request. Much documentation has already been placed on this web site. If there are any documents missing that you would like to see published, let us know.

As of 29th November 2005, there were 815 pupils on roll, equally split between boys and girls.
