17 Jul 2006 - Sporting Success at Willowgarth
Year 9 pupils won the Barnsley Schools League Cup football - beating Kirk Balk 2-1. Willowgarth started the game well with a handful of chances, one dropping to Ricky Parkin who hit a shot on the half volley. Unfortunately hitting it too well as it sailed over the bar. Grant Darley opened the scoring with a fabulous individual effort, dribbling the ball from the half way line and finishing the run with a sweetly struck left footed half volley. End of 1st half 1-0. Willowgarth started the second half slowly, Kirk Balk had several chances but with Mathew Ogley on form they failed to score. The second goal came mid way through the half, when Ashley Gillespie picked up the ball and proceeded on another individual run. The play opened up, Ashley took his opportunity and drove through the defence, finishing the ball with a cheeky toe poke: 2-0. Throughout the game the Willowgarth back four were solid. They had been under pressure for the last 20mins of the half when they finally broke, assisted by Ryan Gregory (our own defender) who lobbed our keeper in an attempt to clear the ball. 2-1. The final 10mins of the game were tense, but with determination to win, Willowgarth pulled through with a 2-1 victory.
