School Journeys and Field work

►School Journeys and Field work
During the journey pupils should remain seated in a forward-facing direction (where the seating so permits), unless permission is given to do otherwise;

seat belts must be worn where fitted; bags and other heavy items should be secured in the luggage spaces provided and NOT stowed in the gangways or left where they might cause injury or problems in cases of emergency;

pupils needing special medication should give it to a member of staff for safekeeping during the journey. Respirators for breathing complaints should be kept by their owner in case of need during the field work;

travel sickness medication is the responsibility of the individual; advice as to the most appropriate time to take such medication will be given by a member of staff on request; pupils likely to need such medication should inform the teacher in charge in advance of the need.

During the fieldwork pupils must stay within close proximity of a member of staff and MUST NOT wander off to explore at any time.

Work on the seashore and river banks often involves walking on rocks which can be wet and slippery. Care must be taken at all times especially in the choice of suitable well-soled footwear. Running and jumping across rocky surfaces are NOT advisable.

Where fieldwork is taking place close to fast-running or deep water, no pupil should be closer to such hazards than a member of staff. Great care must be taken in this respect when walking on cliff tops and working on rocky crags.

NO FOOD should be eaten during such fieldwork where there is any possibility of contact with polluted waters (sea and streams) or ground. Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and clean water after fieldwork has finished BEFORE any food is consumed.

All cuts and grazes should be reported so that first aid can be given when necessary. A First Aid kit should always be available. The need for specialist emergency equipment
(eg emergency blanket or life jackets) is left to the discretion of the teacher in charge.

Even on the brightest of days, the weather can soon turn cold and wet. Pupils should be prepared for this and bring along their own wet-weather clothing. A limited number of kagoules and over-trousers belonging to the school, can be made available on request. Back to top
